Puppies fast asleep 07/07/2011
How comfy do these little cocker spaniels look, all cuddled up with their brothers and sisters? Day 6 and some of these blue roan cocker puppies are beginning to get spotty noses! They aren't half growing - some puppies are twice the size they were when they were born. Mothers milk must be good stuff. Mother to a brood of 5 day old cocker spaniels puppies still enjoys having breakfast in bed. She seems to think that valuable short spells away from her puppies is better spent sniffing around the garden and getting a bit of shut eye These 5 day old blue roan puppies are now looking as if they have been playing around in some coal dust with their noses and feet turning a grey colour Cocker spaniel puppies 4 days old 07/04/2011
Is Mum sulky? She looks as if she is - but no I don't think so - she's just concentrating and with 9 demanding puppies I suppose she needs to keep her wits about her! Puppies are 4 days old now and their feet are turning from pink to smudgy grey showing their blue roan colour scheme is coming along nicely. We wondered last night if Butty was running a bit short of milk for her large brood so tried a bottle and some formula - but to no avail - they were having none of it. This morning they all seem pretty content again so we're hoping her milk supply has caught up with the puppies demand. She is giving extra feeds to the smallest puppy while the others are asleep Cocker Puppies Day 2 07/02/2011
OK, puppy grandma is learning! We got up this morning to find mum had moved all her puppies into her old bed and everything looked rather squashed - scared she might accidentally lie on one. So, we removed the old bed and put her and the puppies back into the large box but gave her a load more old curtains and towels so it was much more 'nest' like. I think she likes this now. She is eating like a horse, but not surprising really with 9 puppies to feed. She seem to separate the puppies into 2 groups - one group feeding and the other group sleeping together. I suppose with 9 puppies and 8 teats a bit of good organisation is called for! Seems to be working nicely, here they are all asleep, not a peep out of them at the moment Cocker Spaniel Puppies One Day Old 07/02/2011
On 1 July 2011, 9 gorgeous cocker spaniel puppies were born in Swansea to our beautiful dog, Butty. Here are some photos of mum and the puppies on their first morning in our world. Butty looks tired but is a natural mother - she gave birth to all of these puppies without any human assistance and began nursing her puppies straight away We can already see the blue roan in these puppies when we look close up (the father, Bruno, was blue roan cocker spaniel, too) - there are the tell tale grey smudging in the white areas on most of the puppies We half expected that Butty would be a natural mother because her mother was. One of Butty's sisters was small and her mother would take this pup off to a quiet corner away from the others to make sure it was getting enough milk! We named her after her mum who was a liver roan cocker spaniel (full name Buttercup). Butty's dad was a blue roan cocker spaniel and so she had brothers and sisters in both colours. These cocker puppies have ears which look as if they are made from really soft black leather! Their eyes are closed and they have pink feet noses and tips to their tails. |
